the first destination was braddock, pa. it’s just outside of pittsburgh. in a car, it is a six hour drive. we expected it would take 10-12 hours and that we’d do it in a day.
we left brooklyn around 1130am. i went a block to the light and turned around and alex wasn’t there. his bike had stalled. i waited a bit, he still didn’t show up. i started to turn around and he came rolling down the road. we got gas and rode over the williamsburg bridge into manhattan. the bikes were smoking and running poorly. there was a moment where we were both ready to turn around. starting a month long trip with bikes that can barely take you two miles is not exactly inspiring. but we went for it.
it took two days to get to pittsburgh. alex threw a chain, my bike ran very poorly in the mountains and generally i don’t think either of us thought we’d make it. there was terrible weather (think black/green skies with lots of lightning and gusts of wind). it took us a while to learn to respect the rain. this picture is from one of the first few times we got caught in a downpour. we were already soaked at this point and i think we put the tarp up just so we could somehow feel a little better about the situation.
